By Scott Drexler
As American’s we seem to have this sense of urgency and are always racing against the clock. We want our products as soon as possible and we want our things done now! All our patience has seemed to have gone out the window. I am just as guilty too. I cannot even seem to wait two additional days to receive my package from UPS, it simply must be expedited. This theme of the “quick fix” only seems to worsen when it comes to our health and well being. We want to lose weight and/or gain muscle quickly. No matter what those cheap late night infomercials tell you, (you know what I am talking about) you cannot lose a large amount of weight or gain muscle overnight. I’m sorry to break it to you, but there is no magic pill that you can take that will “shed inches off your waist” or have you looking like that Calvin Klein model you see in those monthly editions of Men’s Health or People Magazine. The truth is when it comes to being healthy, patience really is a virtue. Surgeries have to be the worst. Must we always look to some medical device or surgical knife to help us meet our goal? If you haven’t already answered, the correct response was “NO!” In fact, the majority of the time we end up worse off than we were before the surgery. Take my injured shoulder for example. I was told I needed surgery on it by an orthopedic surgeon and his employees hounded me for months trying to get me to schedule a surgery date. This injury is fairly minor as far as shoulder injuries are concerned, but you think I am going to go under the knife if I can possibly rehab it instead? Well, my first inclination was “Yes” because I wanted the quickest fix. Though I am not talking about a surgery which includes getting fat sucked out of my body, it just proves my point that I, as an American, have no patience. So, in effect, I am not only writing this for your sake, but mine as well. Be patient, realistic, and persistent with your health and you will get to where you want to be. It just may take a little time.

Riverside Trainer’s New Book Shares “Secrets” of Health and Fitness
Hard work and long-term commitment trump trendy diets and surgeries, says president of Angie’s World and author of the new book, “Body by Angie.”

RIVERSIDE, CA—If you’re overweight and unhealthy and want to do something about it, Angie Lustrick has some advice for you.

Ignore the ever-present ads for weight-loss surgery (it’s a lot riskier—and costlier—than they let on). Forget the quick-fix diet fads—the only weight you’ll lose will be from your wallet.

Instead, take a page—literally—out of Lustrick’s new book, “Body by Angie: Is Your Body Bankrupt? Learn to Invest in Your Health.”

In her book, Lustrick, president of Riverside-based personal training and nutrition center Angie’s World, explains why starvation diets, risky surgeries and unrealistic exercise regimens simply don’t work.

The truth is, getting and staying in shape isn’t easy.

It takes hard work, dedication and the right mindset. And support from expert trainers such as the staff at Angie’s World doesn’t hurt, either.

What’s really needed is a life-changing commitment to getting and staying healthy, says Lustrick, who understands firsthand the challenges of being overweight.

A decade ago, she was overweight, hypoglycemic and unhappy with the way she looked and felt. Like increasing numbers of Americans, her lack of fitness was affecting her overall health, and she had to do something about it.

Ten years later, Lustrick is a certified nutritionist and personal trainer. She has competed in marathons, triathlons, bodybuilding events and other sporting competitions. At 34, she’s in the best shape of her life—physically, mentally and emotionally. And she’s inspiring others to embark on the same life-changing journey she undertook.

Her message couldn’t come at a more appropriate time. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that 32.2 percent of adult men and 35.5 percent of adult women were obese. According to medical experts, obesity can lead to chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, certain cancers and arthritis.
No miracle diet or dangerously invasive surgery will help you lose the weight and keep it off, says Lustrick, who appeared at book signings in the Inland Empire in July— including an event scheduled at Barnes & Noble booksellers on July 24— where she dispensed advice and inspired people to set and pursue their own weight-loss goals.

As Lustrick says, eating sensibly and committing to long-term exercise goals will allow you to lose body fat and add muscle, increase your metabolism and stamina and improve your overall health.

A sensible—and increasingly affordable—approach to getting in shape is by working with a personal trainer. And “Body by Angie” tells you how to choose a trainer who will help design a safe and appropriate exercise routine, get maximum benefit from your workouts and keep you motivated to do even better.

Lustrick received her certified nutritionist degree from American Health Science University and earned a degree in Biology from the University of California, Riverside. She was diagnosed as pre-diabetic in her early college years, and knew she had to make a major lifestyle change. She entered a nationally sponsored transformation contest in 2000 and won first place out of 30,000 participants. She has since started Angie’s World, a Center of Excellence for the First Line Therapy® Program, a medically proven nutrition program.

By Wilma Young

Do you find yourself saying, “It’s a new beginning. I will conquer IT this time. I will eat only minuscule
amounts, deprive myself of the things I love and drink diet soda until the cows
come home to quench my hunger. I will be a diet martyr even if my family hates me in the meantime.
Besides, they will LOVE me more when I am thinner. I will MAKE this weight get
off of me even if it kills me”!!!…Well believe me honey, it will!!
How many times have you decided that, by brute force, you will make your body acquiesce to
your ideals and finally have the body you have always wanted? Then you end up not
only NOT thinner but grumpier and unhappier?
First, you must eat to release weight. If you starve the muscle you will reduce your metabolism and your body will hold onto the fat because it goes into starvation mode. It doesn’t know
when it will get it’s next meal and especially in the case of women, the body will hold onto the
fat for survival. Then when you sacrifice to the point that you feel totally
deprived, your body feels annoyed and you hold onto resentment. This negative energy
stays stored in your cells. It will have a major impact on how your
body holds onto toxins and that inevitably will hinder your progress.
Then, the dreaded diet soda. You think that having zero calories and plenty of chemicals
floating in your system will trick your body into weight loss but think again. The
chemicals are sending out signals that tell your body it is getting sugar, but
it really ISN’T getting sugar. Now your body is releasing insulin to manage the
sugar that can’t be found and then you will store all of this in your tummy area. You feel
bloated and you start holding onto to water weight. This is NOT the formula for a happy, healthy
life.
May I suggest that the slow steady pace, the one that allows for meals
every 2-3 hours, a little variance when it comes to your favorite item (in
moderation of course) and a ZERO TOLERANCE for diet soda is the key to long term
health and weightloss success! I prefer you do not consume any soda at all in your diet but
if you absolutely must, make it a regular. Granted, it is 10+ teaspoons of sugar -
but at least your body recognizes it as sugar and not the chemical composition
that even a chemistry student would have a hard time deciphering. Remember, your
body is a miracle. It can take a lot and keep on going but let’s get serious. Do
you want to live on this rollercoaster? Do you want to hate not being able to
indulge every once in a while? Do you want to send the signals to your body that
you will force it into submission? Anyone who has dealt with small children and tried to force them into submission can tell you this is a short term solution that will make the next blow-out bigger. Be kind to
yourself. Give your body the foods it really wants so it can perform at optimal
levels. And PLEASE let the soda go. Your body will react by achieving an ideal weight and your cells and your soul will thank you!

The local small business development center recently asked me to express my professional journey. As I thought about it, I found correlations between my own transformation and that of my business!
I am passionate about my business but as many of you know, passion is not the only ingredient to being successful. Any business owner knows (and busy mom’s, college students, and hard-working professionals) that gaining and achieving balance AND success is truly an art form. I started out with the intention of bringing a healthy lifestyle to others but soon found that there were many elements besides my core services that would determine whether I would succeed or not. I had to learn from my own experience of an unhealthy, pre-diabetic lifestyle that the building blocks to a fulfilling and energetic life started out with baby steps. I had to learn how to eat better, work out effectively, and understand nutrition and its impact on me. I have, in 10 years, taken my body to an unbelievable place… winning contests, reducing my body fat and adding years to my life. In the same 10 years I have had to learn the building blocks for my business. They included managing the money and inventory, mentoring employees and learning about lease agreements, just to name a few. I have been extremely fortunate to positively impact the health of hundreds of clients and I know this impacts us economically also. When you help one person, whether it be in health or business (or any other avenue for that matter!), the whole community thrives… in fact, dare I say, the whole planet thrives!
I feel empowered to provide jobs and add to the economic impact of our region. But most importantly I am proud to have learned the steps to have a healthy business along with my healthy body and that in turn creates a healthy world! I applaud all of you who, day in and day out, work hard to achieve, give back, and thrive. In each and every small detail that we undertake, there is an impact to those around us. I want to thank you for also choosing to be a positive force in our community! Together, we can make a difference!

By Wilma Young, CPT

You know the drill. It’s Thanksgiving, then Christmas and then of course a Happy New Year, right? But when we let ourselves have a little too much “celebration” and too little activity we feel a bit sluggish and in some need of a fast fix. My advice to you is RESIST!!! Resist the urge to go the “quick fix” route. The only way you can lose weight quickly is in an unhealthy way…starvation, too little protein, and skipping breakfast. Doing these things leads to unhealthful weight loss and irritability and then our family and friends pay the price of a grumpier “you”! This route will not bring you to a healthy body weight that can be sustained for a long period and then next year you could be right back in the same boat with even more to lose. Let’s get off this roller coaster once and for all. I am going to suggest that THIS year you do it differently, that THIS year you will make the consistent healthy choices that will prolong your life, that THIS year you will give yourself more energy and a stronger body and set yourself up for a happier you all year long. If you just commit to one change per week and stick with it you will impact your life not only physically but you will empower yourself spiritually. This year will be the year that you invest in yourself! Besides, aren’t you worth it?
