Angie To Speak at Breast Cancer Fundraiser
Friday, October 1st, 2010The Express Lane to Recovery
Monday, September 27th, 2010By Scott Drexler
It started out like any other Thursday. I woke up, went to class, and worked-out. Nothing too exciting, except at around 10:40pm on January 28th, when I was out with a friend I checked my cell phone to find eight missed calls from my brother and mother followed by a bad feeling in my stomach. In a panic I called my mother to hear her trembling voice tell me “Scott, Dad was hit by a truck when he was crossing the street. We are at the hospital right now. Can you come down?” Naturally, I jumped into my car and broke more traffic laws than I would like to remember on the way to the hospital. After parking I rushed to the emergency room to find my father bruised and bloody, but conscious and coherent. You can only imagine the relief I felt after seeing him talking and cracking jokes. We all realized how lucky we were that we could joke “You think you look bad, you should see the truck.” Miraculously after being clipped by a small truck, my father only suffered a fractured orbital (eye socket), a broken nose, some bruised ribs and minor sprains.
Though these injuries were minor considering the circumstances, the healing was going to take some time and. So, like any good son would do, I went to Angie’s World to buy some products which included: BCAA’s (Branch Chain Amino Acids) to assist with muscle recovery, EPA-EPA-DHA 6:1 (Fish Oil) to help with inflammation and pain, Multigenics Intensive Care because everyone should have their daily vitamins, and Traumatic Injury Remedy to speed up the soft tissue recovery for bruises and wounds. With the help of these products as well as the proper rest and being in good physical shape before the accident, my father was back on his feet and at work so quickly that it even shocked his doctor and co-workers. In fact, he was even back to riding his bike and playing basketball within a few months. So, for those of you that have been slacking on your Metagencis products or doubt if they actually work at all, here is a little something to think about.
Don’t Believe The Lap Band Ads!
Thursday, September 23rd, 2010Everyone has seen them -the billboards, the ads, the commercials- all touting the miracle of by-pass surgery. The one that really got under my skin this week was a print ad with a VERY large man with a huge red circle with the slash across the middle. The tag line is “Diets Fail, Lap-Band Works”. Well I was appalled. This has been building up because we recently had a client come in who was around 190 pounds and frustrated because her doctor was trying to convince her that the lap-band surgery was the answer for her. This was malpractice as far as I was concerned. With her tall frame and proportional distribution of excess weight and no major health issues (like chronic disease) she was most definetly NOT a candidate for this extreme measure. The ad suggested that diets don’t work. This is a lie! The medical data shows that the implementation of a nutritional supportive and medically proven lifestyle plan can not only help you lose weight but also manage chronic disease. In addition, the data proves reduction in medications and it shows that those that take this healthy path KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF in the long run! These ads also do not tell you that when you undergo this procedure you are required to be on the strictest of eating plans and some of it is not temporary. You also place yourself in a state of malnutrition. Eventually, you still have to learn to navigate your foods choices. Add to this the fact that it doesn’t help with discovering the underlying reason that you gained the weight in the first place. It may be chronic illness, inflammation of the digestive system, allergies to certain foods or maybe an addiction. I emplore all of you out there, PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED! The only healthy way to take your life back is to make different choices, educate yourself about the malnourished S.A.D Diet(Standard American Diet) and seek the help of a nutritional expert like a Certified Nutritionist or a Naturopathic Doctor. Remember Hippocrates the father of medicine said it best…”Let Food Be Thy Medicine!”
Who Needs An Energy Boost?
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010Many of us are tired and in need of a boost sometime in our day. We feel
sluggish and over-taxed and usually the first inclination is to grab a soda,
coffee or candy bar. These are short lived energy boosts and are usually
followed by a drop so low (lower than the original drop) that we are quickly
reaching for another artificial boost. This leads to a vicious cycle that ends
up taxing our immune system, depleting our natural energy stores and leaving us
susceptible to chronic disease. A great way to supplement a much needed energy
boost is with vitamin B-12. B-12 can be found in meats, eggs, milk and dairy
products and some seafood. It is not commonly found in most vegetables except
for sea vegetables like kelp, dulse and nori (think what sushi is wrapped in).
B-12 is supportive to our nervous system, helps with depression and provides the energy we are seeking at those critical times of a stressful day.
It also helps to alleviate the symptoms of anemia (tiredness)and improves the absorption of protein. We have also heard from some living in Alaska that when they use B-12 it prevnts mosquitos from attacking them.
The problem with a food source of B-12 is that it takes a while for the body to convert the food to this nutrient and we need our fix NOW! Vitamin B-12 is
available as an injection from your doctor. In my opinion this is niether
convenient or desirable. One of the best ways to get the impact of the energy
boost is with a sublingual form (under the tongue). This is quick and effective.
This pathway goes directly into your blood stream and will enable you to get
your B-12 to activate quickly. You will also be improving your mood and nervous
system. So if you are a college student trying to cram for finals, a Mom who is
spinning with the a list of errands or a business person
looking to gain an energetic edge without paying the price from artificial
boosters, try sublingual B-12! Your heart, mind and adrenal system with thank
you!

The Avandia Controversey
Saturday, July 31st, 2010A Food and Drug advisory panel has recommended that GlaxoSmithKline’s diabetes drug Avandia be taken off the market or sold under “severely restricted” conditions. The concern is over the added heart attack risks associated with this drug as well as some questionable behavior concerning the company’s documents from the 1990′s. I am generally not an advocate of using pharmaceuticals unless you are in an acute situation but unfortunatley the S.A.D diet (Standard American Diet)that most people adhere to puts their bodies under acute stress on a daily basis. In addition, the alternative of utilizing natures medicine cabinet to turn around the body’s response to insulin resistance takes some time and investment of healthy habits. Frankly, most of us don’t want to go through this effort. We want to take a pill to fix our problems but the truth is that the pill only deals with the symptoms and not the real underlying problems that are going on. In the case of Type 2 diabetes, your body is sending out signals to you that it cannot manage the onslaught of high glycemic, overly processed garbage you are feeding it and the absence of physical exertion and “live” active foods that contain good fats, phytonutrients and lean protein. In defense of GlaxoSmithKline (which I never thought I would be doing)there own published fact sheet for Avandia states…
“AVANDIA is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.”
The main message is ADJUNCT TO DIET AND EXERCISE! It states this three different times and yet we tend to ignore this part of the equation. We know with medically proven data that a mediterrean diet (Like our First Line Therapy program)along with an easy exercise program (walking 3-5 times per week for 30 minutes) will do more on a long term basis to manage Type 2 diabetes than the temporary “bandage’ of a pharmaceutical drug. Please be clear that I am not advocating that someone abruptly discontinue their medication. But I encourage you to discuss the lifestyles changes necessary with your Doctor and Nutritionist to develop a plan that will bring you life long control of your diabetes. Not only will you feel better but you’ll look better too.
Why Shop at Angie’s World
Friday, July 30th, 2010By Scott Drexler
Much like the rest of you I try to be the smartest shopper I can be and have fallen victim to sacrificing quantity for quality. Heck, who can beat a 1,000 tablet multivitamin bottle that can last me 6 months compared to one that will only last me a single month? Well, it is the quality of that one month bottle of vitamins that beats that six month juggernaut. If there is one important lesson I have learned from working at Angie’s World other than the obvious, it is the quality of the substances I put into my body. If I want to perform at the highest, healthiest and most efficient level, why would I want to settle for less? Caution to those who read any further, this is going to sound like a lame sales pitch, but the beauty of Angie’s World is Angie refuses to have anything in her store that she hasn’t researched and/or used herself. Being that I am somewhat of a health-nut myself, I cannot begin to describe how many times I have walked into your generic, corporate nutrition shop and asked the employee a question about a product and have gotten the same automated response that can be found on the products website. Not that this is a bad thing, but it just demonstrates how little is known of the actual quality of the product. I am by no means claiming to be more knowledgeable than these other workers, but unlike the other stores I have a trained and certified professional (Angie) in store that is able to answer any questions I or any customer may have. I don’t know about you, but being told by a certified nutritionist/trainer whether a product will work for me and how it will improve my life gives me much better piece of mind than saving some money on a product that may not actually work. So, next time you see a lifetime supply of multivitamins for really cheap, instead of thinking “That is a great deal!” maybe you should consider why this product is being sold for such a low price. It’s because of the QUALITY!
Feeding the Brain
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010When we eat right and exercise we know we are improving our physique but does it really make that much of a difference in our brains? The answer is YES! Choosing the right fuel for our brains is as important as choosing the right foods for weight loss and a healthy heart. Our brain accounts for 2% of our body weight but uses roughly 20% of our daily calories to function. When the brain is given the right fats and nutrition it will perform optimally, stave off depression and effectivly calculate it’s daily tasks. B-vitamins and Omega3 fats are the key ingrediants to a healthy brain. B vitamins can be found in eggs, brown rice, leafy greens, mushrooms, beef, avocados, nuts, seeds etc. Omega3 fats can be found in cold water fish especially sardines and salmon (wild-caught, please), olive oil, avocado and alfalfa. Pregnant women, children and people recovering from TBI’s (traumatic brain injuries) should pay special attention to their intake of these nutrients especially because the reconnection of neurons is essential to brain development and recovery. This is also good advice for students and most people who want to walk around with a clear head instead of a cloudy one. Remember, your body is like a car. You drive it around all day long and if you put the right fuel in your tank you’ll be able to go for miles and miles!
Traumatic Brain Injury
Thursday, July 22nd, 2010At Angie’s World, we have achieved great success with clients with Traumatic Brain Injury, also known as TBI. Many facilities provide care and occupational therapy for such patients but families are often frustrated with the overall results. Studies have shown that exercise for someone with TBI provides many positive benefits such as increased blood flow and faster nerve impulses to the brain (which improves how quickly you process or think), and increases body awareness. Exercise also improves mood and memory, increases heart and lung efficiency, and positively affects balance.
Donny Winn, A TBI client, has had remarkable success with our program. Please check out www.donnywinn.com. Donny has been training with us for over 2 years and has developed stronger core stability, improved range of motion, and muscle strength that has made him more independent. Check out his before and after photos here. You can even see a video of his workouts here.
Another of our clients, is Brennen Haworth. When Brennen, A.k.a “Shoeey”, came to us, he couldn’t move his arms or legs. We began his program with a stretching routine to help relax the muscles. Now, less than a year, Shoeey can perform shoulder rows, ride a stationary bicycle, and can use various leg machines.
Our TBI clients have had various degrees of injury and we are able to work around almost all challenges, including wheelchairs, walkers, feeding tubes, etc.
As a certified nutritionist, I emphasis the importance of nutrition to help the individual in the recovery process. I will help design a program that is right for the individual to increase brain function and improve body composition which is a significant component to their progress. I can also provide information on supplementation, working directly with their doctor.
If you or a loved one is frustrated due to a TBI, we can help. Please contact us for a free consultation.
