The Stress of the Season and the Gift of Health!

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Running around to shop for family, working hard to mail out cards and planning and preparing for the family festivities runs us all down. Then add the extra treats that are lying around and now the nasty bug that is trying to take hold of our immune system and we have a recipe for disaster. At this time it is important to remember that caring for ourselves is paramount to our well being and the well being of those around us. I have heard clients on more than one occasion say that working out should wait until after the first of the year. That squeezing in one more thing is just taking too much time. I want to put a big “ixne” on this idea. If there is ever a time to invest in your workout it is now. Stress and sugar combined with a reduced workout schedule will make you more tired and less than thrilled when the New Year comes along. Knowing that even a 10 minute jumping jack and stretch routine will help you sleep better, manage the shopping frenzy at the malls and boost your immune system should motivate you to spend this minimal amount of time to ensure your well being!I want to suggest that you begin by visualizing yourself feeling strong and energetic. I want you to feel how good it feels to wear your jeans and have them not cut into your gut when you sit down to enjoy your family and friends. I want you to have a holiday that is happy but that doesn’t come with the price of extra weight and lethargy that you will be paying for in January. It’s kind of like credit card debt. What you can’t afford to pay for today will only you cost you more when the bill actually comes due! Be your own Santa this year and give yourself the gift of health! Provide your family with the loving, happy and radiant light that is you and only you. In the end, that is all we ever really want for ourselves and our loved ones and it can only start with you! Happy Holidays!

P.S. Remember, Angie’s World has gift certificates available in any denomination. Contact the office to purchase. My Mom does this for my family members every year and it is one of our favorite gifts. It also gets the New Year off to the right start!!

3 Day Breast Cancer Walk

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

We are so proud to honor Cheri Adame, Jennifer Mumford, Sue Thomas, and Nancy Tittenhofer for participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure Event in San Diego this past November… Their team was called “Annie’s Angels” in memory of Annie Ramos, who lost her long battle with breast cancer this past February. Annie was a good friend of Nancy’s, so Nancy decided it was time to participate in the event again (she has done so twice previously). This was Sue and Jennifer’s first time, and Cheri’s second. “There is no question it is a huge time commitment to prepare and train for walking 60 miles in 3 days – 20 miles a day. Many weekends were devoted to walking long miles. It is so worth it, however. It was one of the most worthwhile experiences in our lives!” exclaims Sue Thomas.
Annie’s Angels raised over $25,000 as a team and the walk as a whole (4,000 walkers) raised over $10.6 million. What a way to help the community and keep themselves in tip top shape. Our hats go off to this exceptional woman and their personal tenacity to make a difference in the world!

The Express Lane to Recovery

Monday, September 27th, 2010

By Scott Drexler
It started out like any other Thursday. I woke up, went to class, and worked-out. Nothing too exciting, except at around 10:40pm on January 28th, when I was out with a friend I checked my cell phone to find eight missed calls from my brother and mother followed by a bad feeling in my stomach. In a panic I called my mother to hear her trembling voice tell me “Scott, Dad was hit by a truck when he was crossing the street. We are at the hospital right now. Can you come down?” Naturally, I jumped into my car and broke more traffic laws than I would like to remember on the way to the hospital. After parking I rushed to the emergency room to find my father bruised and bloody, but conscious and coherent. You can only imagine the relief I felt after seeing him talking and cracking jokes. We all realized how lucky we were that we could joke “You think you look bad, you should see the truck.” Miraculously after being clipped by a small truck, my father only suffered a fractured orbital (eye socket), a broken nose, some bruised ribs and minor sprains.
Though these injuries were minor considering the circumstances, the healing was going to take some time and. So, like any good son would do, I went to Angie’s World to buy some products which included: BCAA’s (Branch Chain Amino Acids) to assist with muscle recovery, EPA-EPA-DHA 6:1 (Fish Oil) to help with inflammation and pain, Multigenics Intensive Care because everyone should have their daily vitamins, and Traumatic Injury Remedy to speed up the soft tissue recovery for bruises and wounds. With the help of these products as well as the proper rest and being in good physical shape before the accident, my father was back on his feet and at work so quickly that it even shocked his doctor and co-workers. In fact, he was even back to riding his bike and playing basketball within a few months. So, for those of you that have been slacking on your Metagencis products or doubt if they actually work at all, here is a little something to think about.

Don’t Believe The Lap Band Ads!

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Everyone has seen them -the billboards, the ads, the commercials- all touting the miracle of by-pass surgery. The one that really got under my skin this week was a print ad with a VERY large man with a huge red circle with the slash across the middle. The tag line is “Diets Fail, Lap-Band Works”. Well I was appalled. This has been building up because we recently had a client come in who was around 190 pounds and frustrated because her doctor was trying to convince her that the lap-band surgery was the answer for her. This was malpractice as far as I was concerned. With her tall frame and proportional distribution of excess weight and no major health issues (like chronic disease) she was most definetly NOT a candidate for this extreme measure. The ad suggested that diets don’t work. This is a lie! The medical data shows that the implementation of a nutritional supportive and medically proven lifestyle plan can not only help you lose weight but also manage chronic disease. In addition, the data proves reduction in medications and it shows that those that take this healthy path KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF in the long run! These ads also do not tell you that when you undergo this procedure you are required to be on the strictest of eating plans and some of it is not temporary. You also place yourself in a state of malnutrition. Eventually, you still have to learn to navigate your foods choices. Add to this the fact that it doesn’t help with discovering the underlying reason that you gained the weight in the first place. It may be chronic illness, inflammation of the digestive system, allergies to certain foods or maybe an addiction. I emplore all of you out there, PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED! The only healthy way to take your life back is to make different choices, educate yourself about the malnourished S.A.D Diet(Standard American Diet) and seek the help of a nutritional expert like a Certified Nutritionist or a Naturopathic Doctor. Remember Hippocrates the father of medicine said it best…”Let Food Be Thy Medicine!”

Quick Fix

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

By Scott Drexler
As American’s we seem to have this sense of urgency and are always racing against the clock. We want our products as soon as possible and we want our things done now!  All our patience has seemed to have gone out the window. I am just as guilty too. I cannot even seem to wait two additional days to receive my package from UPS, it simply must be expedited. This theme of the “quick fix” only seems to worsen when it comes to our health and well being. We want to lose weight and/or gain muscle quickly. No matter what those cheap late night infomercials tell you, (you know what I am talking about) you cannot lose a large amount of weight or gain muscle overnight. I’m sorry to break it to you, but there is no magic pill that you can take that will “shed inches off your waist” or have you looking like that Calvin Klein model you see in those monthly editions of Men’s Health or People Magazine. The truth is when it comes to being healthy, patience really is a virtue. Surgeries have to be the worst. Must we always look to some medical device or surgical knife to help us meet our goal? If you haven’t already answered, the correct response was “NO!” In fact, the majority of the time we end up worse off than we were before the surgery. Take my injured shoulder for example. I was told I needed surgery on it by an orthopedic surgeon and his employees hounded me for months trying to get me to schedule a surgery date. This injury is fairly minor as far as shoulder injuries are concerned, but you think I am going to go under the knife if I can possibly rehab it instead? Well, my first inclination was “Yes” because I wanted the quickest fix. Though I am not talking about a surgery which includes getting fat sucked out of my body, it just proves my point that I, as an American,  have no patience. So, in effect, I am not only writing this for your sake, but mine as well. Be patient, realistic, and persistent with your health and you will get to where you want to be. It just may take a little time.

The Avandia Controversey

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

A Food and Drug advisory panel has recommended that GlaxoSmithKline’s diabetes drug Avandia be taken off the market or sold under “severely restricted” conditions. The concern is over the added heart attack risks associated with this drug as well as some questionable behavior concerning the company’s documents from the 1990′s. I am generally not an advocate of using pharmaceuticals unless you are in an acute situation but unfortunatley the S.A.D diet (Standard American Diet)that most people adhere to puts their bodies under acute stress on a daily basis. In addition, the alternative of utilizing natures medicine cabinet to turn around the body’s response to insulin resistance takes some time and investment of healthy habits. Frankly, most of us don’t want to go through this effort. We want to take a pill to fix our problems but the truth is that the pill only deals with the symptoms and not the real underlying problems that are going on. In the case of Type 2 diabetes, your body is sending out signals to you that it cannot manage the onslaught of high glycemic, overly processed garbage you are feeding it and the absence of physical exertion and “live” active foods that contain good fats, phytonutrients and lean protein. In defense of GlaxoSmithKline (which I never thought I would be doing)there own published fact sheet for Avandia states…

“AVANDIA is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.”

The main message is ADJUNCT TO DIET AND EXERCISE! It states this three different times and yet we tend to ignore this part of the equation. We know with medically proven data that a mediterrean diet (Like our First Line Therapy program)along with an easy exercise program (walking 3-5 times per week for 30 minutes) will do more on a long term basis to manage Type 2 diabetes than the temporary “bandage’ of a pharmaceutical drug. Please be clear that I am not advocating that someone abruptly discontinue their medication. But I encourage you to discuss the lifestyles changes necessary with your Doctor and Nutritionist to develop a plan that will bring you life long control of your diabetes. Not only will you feel better but you’ll look better too.

Barnes and Noble Was A Great Success!

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Yesterday we had a wonderful group come to the Riverside Barnes and Noble for Angie and her book, “BODY BY ANGIE, Is Your Body Bankrupt, Learn to Invest in Yourself”! The day included an author discussion as well as a FREE body composition test for anyone who attended. What a delightful group we had and their questions were exceptional. Many had already read the book and Angie was able to interact with individuals to answer their specific questions. What an inspiring day to see others make the connection with nutrition, energy and health that myself and those in my profession can often take for common knowledge in our everyday lives. I KNOW that there were many recommendations given out yesterday that were minor changes in the events of that person’s daily activities but actions that are going to pay off BIG TIME for them in the future. I am happy to know that there are people being affected in such a positive way by Angie’s knowledge and presence in our community. I consider myself very lucky to witness her engage her passion with the intention of making this place we call our body a healthier and happier one. I also know that what she is doing will help to reduce the effects of chronic disease, mobilize people into physical activity and ultimately make this world a better place for each and every on of us!

So What Are YOU going to do on your 65th Birthday?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

It’s 10:15 pm on a week night. For those of you that know me, this is WAY past my bedtime. I get up at 4:15 am every morning so I am always in bed at 8 pm.

Tonight is different. Tonight I am watching a GPS tracking device online.  Why? John Adair is finishing a 22+ mile hike on Mt. Whitney.  John is a client of mine who has struggled with a weight problem for many years. He appeared to not be motivated or inspired to sticking to a exercise/eating plan… until this year. John turned 65 this year. In fact, today.

In his own words: “Tomorrow is my Sixty-Fifth birthday (7/22).  Friends have suggested that I am now “OVER THE HILL” I have given this a little bit of thought and I have to ask myself, what is on the other side? After a short amount of time I decided I would take a look before I found myself some place I may not want to be.So to mark this point in life’s progression I have decided to climb Mt Whitney and see for myself what is on the other side? Mt Whitney (14,505 ft) the highest point in the continental US. I will camp (7/21) at the trail head and plan to depart sometime between 1am and 4am (7/22). I would like to reach the summit between noon and 3pm, take a short rest and start my decent. I hope to return by 11pm.  The trail is about 22 plus miles round trip, with an altitude gain of about 6,700 ft. It will be a long day.  This will be a life time first; I have never climbed any mountain before. I have not asked anyone to join me, this is a solo effort.  I invite you to follow my efforts by clicking on the link below (It will show a Google Map with my tracking points).  I will be carrying a GPS tracking device with me.  It should report every 10 min for 24 hrs. Here is the link to follow my progress on climb to the summit of Mt Whitney

(Please check out his voyage. You can change the view to satellite to see the trees and the snow.)

How inspiring is that?  This year, when John decided on this goal, it was like a spark lit up inside of him.  He was no longer trying to lose 40 lbs, he was on a mission.  When his mind set changed from a number on a scale to a reason to be leaner, John’s life transformed.  John wanted to eat better so that he could hike longer. He wanted to walk everyday because he had a goal – an exact date – to hike the tallest mountain he could find.  This transformation is the key to releasing weight for good.  If you are still trying to lose a few pounds, I invite you to think outside of the box and do a bit of soul searching. Find out what you really want to do with a leaner body. Dance? Ski dive? Rock climb? Climb a mountain?  When you follow your dreams and listen to your inner voice, you will have the motivation you are looking for to achieve your goals.

I have been tracking him all day. I sent him energetic vibes to keep him strong as he switch backed up the mountain.  I cheered for him from my computer as he reached the summit.  I watched as he descended the mountain after being up for over 12 hours.  I remembered our conversations about what he should be eating on his hike and hoped that he wasn’t feeling hungry or overly fatigued. I wondered if I gave him all the advise he needed to make his goal.  And now I wait in anticipation for John to arrive safely back.

Tonight I am congratulating John for doing something many fit 65 year olds wouldn’t consider doing.  He is moments away from arriving back at the Whitney Portals.  His family is there to surprise him.  I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate life, doing something you physically didn’t think was possible.
